“The entire object of true education, is to make people not merely do the right thing, but to enjoy right things; not merely industrious, but to love industry; not merely learned, but to love knowledge.” John Ruskin

Not Merely Learned presents the diverse and hybrid work of a collection of creative practitioners, who draw on a number of visual languages, from Graphic Design, Illustration and Sculpture to New Media, Textiles and Fine Art.

The exciting range of work presented in Not Merely Learned, the final exhibition for students graduating from the BA Visual Arts course at School of Art Bournville, has developed from an interdisciplinary course, which has produced an eclectic group of new artists and designers.

The exhibition title is taken from a quote by John Ruskin and refers to the long history of art and design education in Bournville. The BA Visual Arts students’ individual skills, knowledge, interests and experience coexist in Birmingham City University’s Maple Road building, part of School of Art Bournville, a contemporary environment, rooted in history. This mix has produced a distinct collective, illustrating the unique and dynamic nature of the course and its alumni.

The exhibition includes concrete jewellery - art to wear by Shantana Edwards; Bastardized – a new typographic font based on found letter forms by Geraldine Marshall; a herd of unfired clay horses by Paul Langford, work by Faye Binnell which combines graffiti with sculpture to colonise the courtyard, films by Michelle Black and Lizzy Piffany and paintings and drawings by Gurbaksh Mahal which record the transient effects of the sun and rain.

The exhibition in Birmingham City University’s Maple Road building is open to the public from Saturday 12 June to Saturday 19th (closed on Sundays) between 10 and 5. A special preview event will be held on Wednesday 16th June between 6 and 8pm.

Venue: Birmingham City University, School of Art, Bournville, Maple Road, B30 2AA

Preview: Wednesday 16th June 2010 – 6.00pm – 8.00pm.

Exhibition Dates: 10am - 5pmSaturday 12th June 2010 – Saturday 19th June 2010. Closed on Sunday.
